Software Engineering Specialist – Backend Systems & Code Evaluation (Remote, Contract)
About the Role
A structured technical evaluation initiative focused on strengthening advanced AI systems’ ability to reason about real-world software engineering problems. The work centers on analyzing codebases, evaluating system design decisions, and assessing implementation quality across backend, full-stack, and infrastructure environments.
This opportunity is designed for experienced software engineers who are comfortable working across unfamiliar systems, reasoning about architecture tradeoffs, and clearly articulating technical decisions. Strong engineering judgment and communication clarity are essential.
The work involves reviewing code, debugging implementations, evaluating system design approaches, and producing structured technical feedback on correctness, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
What You'll Do
- Review and evaluate code across backend, full-stack, and systems environments
- Debug, analyze, and improve software implementations and architecture decisions
- Assess tradeoffs in scalability, performance, security, and maintainability
- Design or evaluate APIs, services, databases, and integration workflows
- Document technical reasoning clearly, including alternatives and tradeoff analysis
- Collaborate on structured technical evaluations and engineering review tasks
- Adapt quickly to new frameworks, codebases, and technical domains
Requirements
- Minimum 3+ years of software engineering experience in production environments
- Strong proficiency in at least one backend or full-stack language (e.g., Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, C++, Go, or Ruby)
- Experience working with APIs, services, databases, or distributed systems
- Strong understanding of debugging, testing, and software architecture principles
- Ability to evaluate unfamiliar codebases and reason through technical design choices
- Clear written communication for technical documentation and analysis
- Comfort working independently in remote, task-driven environments
- Availability for approximately 10–15 hours per week on a flexible schedule
