Medical Oncologist – AI Clinical Reasoning Specialist

United States (Remote) Contract Platform: Mercor

About the Role

A high-impact AI research initiative focuses on improving advanced medical AI systems' ability to reason through complex oncology cases. The project emphasizes clinical trial design, patient eligibility assessment, treatment selection, and alignment with current oncology standards of care.

This opportunity is suited to qualified medical oncologists or hematology-oncology specialists with recent hands-on clinical experience in the United States. Candidates should be able to assess complex clinical scenarios, identify errors in AI-generated recommendations, and communicate evidence-based medical reasoning with precision.

The work involves developing realistic oncology case scenarios, evaluating AI-generated clinical assessments, and documenting clinical inaccuracies, reasoning gaps, and potential patient-safety concerns. Strong clinical judgment, clear written communication, and familiarity with current treatment guidelines are critical to success.

What You'll Do

  • Develop realistic, clinically nuanced oncology scenarios to assess AI performance in complex medical problem-solving.
  • Design case-based tasks involving clinical trial protocols, eligibility criteria, treatment pathways, and patient-specific decision-making.
  • Evaluate AI-generated clinical responses for medical accuracy, completeness, and consistency with current standards of care.
  • Identify flawed reasoning, missed diagnoses, inappropriate treatment recommendations, and gaps in clinical justification.
  • Document evidence-based clinical assessments and explain the rationale supporting appropriate medical decisions.
  • Assess whether AI-generated recommendations account for relevant patient characteristics, contraindications, and clinical context.
  • Provide structured expert feedback to support the evaluation and improvement of advanced AI models.
  • Maintain accuracy and consistency across clinical reviews while following applicable confidentiality and data-handling requirements.

Requirements

  • MD or DO degree.
  • Current enrollment in or completion of a fellowship in medical oncology or hematology-oncology.
  • Current or recent clinical practice treating oncology patients in the United States, with clinical practice experience within the past three years.
  • Strong understanding of oncology diagnosis, treatment planning, and evidence-based clinical decision-making.
  • Familiarity with oncology clinical trial design, eligibility criteria, and interpretation of clinical evidence.
  • Ability to identify inaccuracies, omissions, unsafe recommendations, and inconsistencies in clinical reasoning.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex medical judgments clearly and precisely.
  • Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment and manage assigned tasks within agreed timelines.
  • Willingness to engage in short-term, project-based independent contracting, with scope and duration subject to change.
  • Ability to work without disclosing confidential or proprietary information belonging to an employer, healthcare institution, or other organization.
  • Eligibility to undertake independent contract work under applicable U.S. work authorization requirements; H-1B and STEM OPT candidates are not supported for this opportunity.
  • Preferred: Three or more years of post-residency clinical experience.
  • Preferred: Recent experience interpreting oncology guidelines, evaluating clinical trial evidence, or reviewing complex treatment decisions.
  • Preferred: Experience with medical AI evaluation, clinical data annotation, medical writing, or structured expert assessment of AI-generated content.
