Computational Mechanical Engineering Specialist

Global, Fully Remote Contract Platform: Micro1

About the Role

A structured AI training initiative focused on mechanical engineering design, physical modeling, simulation, technical problem-solving, and Python-based engineering workflows. The work involves developing and validating solutions across structural, thermal, dynamic, and multiphysics domains.

This opportunity is ideal for mechanical engineers with strong applied-mechanics fundamentals and hands-on experience with computational analysis or simulation. Candidates should be comfortable translating physical requirements into models and evaluating whether results satisfy engineering and physical constraints.

The work involves creating geometry and meshes, defining materials, loads, contacts, and boundary conditions, running simulations, analyzing outputs, and validating results against calculations or reference data. Sound engineering judgment, reproducibility, and accurate interpretation of simulation results are critical.

What You'll Do

  • Solve and validate mechanical-engineering problems involving design, analysis, simulation, testing, or R&D
  • Translate physical systems and engineering requirements into analytical or computational models
  • Create and modify geometry, meshes, materials, loads, contacts, constraints, and solver inputs
  • Perform structural, thermal, dynamic, fatigue, buckling, vibration, and related analyses
  • Use Python to automate model preparation, simulations, parameter sweeps, optimization, postprocessing, and verification
  • Analyze stress, strain, displacement, temperature, heat flow, deformation, frequency response, safety factors, and related outputs
  • Compare simulation results with hand calculations, experimental data, reference cases, and expected physical behavior
  • Diagnose invalid geometry, mesh problems, convergence failures, incorrect boundary conditions, and unrealistic results
  • Review AI-generated engineering solutions for reasoning errors, incorrect assumptions, and violated physical constraints
  • Develop reproducible reference solutions and objective validation checks
  • Iteratively improve designs for performance, mass, strength, stiffness, thermal behavior, reliability, and manufacturability

Requirements

  • MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline, or BS in Mechanical Engineering with 1–2+ years of relevant professional experience
  • Strong understanding of applied mechanics and mechanical-engineering fundamentals
  • Experience developing analytical, computational, or simulation-based engineering solutions
  • Practical proficiency with Python
  • Experience with at least one mechanical-engineering, geometry, meshing, or simulation tool accessible through CLI, scripting, configuration files, or a programmatic API
  • Ability to select and justify loads, boundary conditions, material properties, physical assumptions, and model fidelity
  • Ability to troubleshoot simulations and determine whether results are physically reasonable
  • Ability to explain engineering decisions, limitations, and design trade-offs clearly
  • Experience with CalculiX, Gmsh, Elmer, FEniCSx, CadQuery, OpenSCAD, OpenFOAM, or an equivalent programmatic engineering tool is preferred
  • Experience with NumPy, SciPy, SymPy, pandas, Matplotlib, Jupyter, CAD/meshing APIs, finite-element libraries, optimization packages, or comparable scientific Python tools is preferred
  • Experience in mechanical design, analysis, simulation, testing, R&D, or computational engineering is preferred
  • Availability for approximately 15 hours per week on a flexible schedule
  • Ability to work fully remotely and begin promptly following onboarding
